Be careful with the plexiglas as it can shatter. The shield they sell is made out of lexan, which won't shatter.

Plexiglass may shatter, but can wood chips really create that kind of force? I have seen plenty of plexiglass windows withstand the impact of thrown rocks without shattering.

ed, i made my own for $10. our woodworkers club did a group buy for the inserts. there were still a few available last i knew. they have been discussed on several forums including IAP (penturners.org), AAW, and The Pen Shop (thepenshop.net)

ed, the cutters come from grizzly for about $2.50 (but they come in boxes of 10) the 3/8" square stock came from hartville hardware (hope dusty doesn't see this) the handle was from skid lumber (hard maple and free) and turned to what i call "sorby" style 14" long. the ferrule came from hartville also (3/4" copper coupler $.46) cut in half $.23. i shaped the end of the square steel stock [ATTACH]3014[/ATTACH]

[ATTACH]3016[/ATTACH]carefully on a bench grinder about 2" to pretty darn close to 3/8" diameter till it fit in a 3/8" hole in the handle and epoxied it in. (not figured in total cost as it was on hand) the tool end was rough shaped on the bench grinder and finished in a vice with a dremel tool. i used a #21 drill and a 10-32 tap to hold the cutter in place. 10-32 x 3/8" flat head screw also from hartville $.18 these pics are borrowed from the IAP site and are not mine.

I have a couple of other things I'm working on that I have to finish but I may have more questions once I start my research. Since I budget tools if I can make something so cheaply it interests me, however time is also in short supply so I sometimes opt to buy rather then build.

I had a ring master on my list too but it didn't make the final cut, well that and another $400 worth of items. I have sketch of a "ring master" work alike but I don't know if I'll have time to work on that either. A toasty 14 degrees outside and about 38 in the shop so all I can do is draw plans and order things... and well post here.

Ed, the cutters/project was november 17, 2008. i know as i picked up the cutters at the grizzly store in springfield, mo.(saved a little shipping for the guys) while on a trip to branson. the screw(grizzly wanted a buck each plus theirs were torx, so i passed on theirs), copper coupler and square stock can be found at any ace, true value or big box store. (hartville hardware just happens to be 8 miles from my house). The next club meeting is jan. 17th. i'll see if gordon has cutters left if you wish. i just spent 5 days over new years near you in minooka. might be doing a craft show there in march

I was just wondering how far back your project went as the prices seem so low! Yes, if you don't mind, I'd like to get at least one to try or better yet maybe two if there are that many. Let me know after the meeting. Like I said I can't do much this time of year shop wise but I can plan and collect parts I need.
