It is hard to say without being able to touch/feel/hear/see. But, I would buy the whole enchilada and save any of the "good" parts as emergency spares.

Do you have the latest paper catalog or have you downloaded the catalog from the Shopsmith web site. Both sources have an illustrated parts breakdown for reference. The prices listed in these should be used for reference only.

I would like to know how you got the retaining loop removed from the control sheave. A picture are worth a thousand words is very true when determining problems and if a part meeds replacing. If you would like to send me (bill@billstoolz.com) a few pictures of the speed control assembly and idler shaft assembly, maybe I could give you a better answer. Regradless of what you do, I would be interested in all the bad/broken parts you may have left when done. I like to analyze them and modify them for various projects that I do. I will pay packing and shipping costs for them.

I have replaced the retaining loop (504187) and roll pin (513734) on the control sheave if the control sheave end bearing is still good.

My soapbox: yes, I love using blue (temporary) and red (permanent) LocTite to prevent set screws and other items from coming loose. I use KROIL for loosening rusty and stuck items. I use Zoom Sprout Turbine Oil for my lubication too.

Maybe it cannot, Bob. The catalog could be misleading. I have not tried. I have a complete spare assembly. If I need to replace this puppy I don't want to take a chance that I cannot do so right now.

I ordered and received a dozen of number 504187, Retaining Loop, which is part of the Control Sheave Assembly, 515556 last week. Check with Jan at Shopsmith as she is aware of most of these subset parts that may or may not be listed. She is excellant for finding these parts.

It IS listed in the online Service and Repair Parts catalog. It is hard to see in the exploded view, but it IS there as well as the rollpin.

At least if you download the PDF version you can 'blow it up' to see things better.
