After mucho trial/error I conclude the following.

1)l/r click and drag to desktop will MOVE.

2) CTL l/r click/drag to desktop will COPY.

3) ALT l/r click/drag to desktop will create link(shortcut).

The CTL or ALT MUST be released LAST or a move will occur.

You know software writers do that just to keep us guessing.
Whenever I get a new piece of software and things are different, I ask. Is it better? No. Is it just as good? Yes. Is it different? Absolutely Yes, but Why?

I have to admit that the 'new' scheme makes more sense and is less steps. The decision of 'which' action' is made at the beginning and does not involve a later 'decision but it requires more fingers and dexterity'. The earlier procedure only required a mouse. Now a second hand is required to press the CTL or ALT key.

I would prefer that COPY be the default.

It is drag and drop. Find the directory you want then drag it to the desktop, it defaults to move so use the Ctrl key to do a copy.

The problem is not so much Windows but SS forum users age. Young people seem to just adapt and move on, while us old guys complain about how it not the old way. Admittedly it is tiring but do not give up on giving us your input.

I am starting to suspect my new computer has a non-functioning right click switch.

Is it possible W11 has not changed the copy/move/link sequence? (lclick/drag = move / rclick/drag = copy/link option)

Do you have a spare mouse available? I try to keep a few of them on hand for "mouse failures". Plug in a spare mouse and that should answer your question quickly about a bad mouse switch.

I am also surprised by all of the Windows hate on this forum. Then again, a computer's OS is just a "tool" for us to use. It is no different than the woodworking tools discussed on this forum everyday. There are plenty of complaints on woodworking tools on this forum, so why not complaints about OS'es? At the end of day, I think it all comes down to personal preference. I have known people that hated Microsoft and by extension Windows...I have known people that hated Apple and by extension MacOS...I have known people that hated DOS...I have known people that hated Android OS...I have known people that hated Unix...I have known people that hated Linux...etc, etc., etc. Personally, I have no experience with Windows 11 yet, but IMHO Windows 10 is the best version of Windows ever released, followed by XP as a close second. Windows 11 just released and most savvy computer users choose not to buy any OS after it first releases. I will wait until the major bugs are uncovered and fixed in Windows 11 before I even contemplate a switch. Until then, Windows 10 is working very well for me.

I bought a Lenovo ideapad (cheap but adequate with added ram(+8gb=12gb) and external dvd writer and ethernet dongle).

Come to find out(google search) it ain't gots a physical right button switch!

The powers to be at Lenovo decided the touchpad tapping . . .is preferable/adequate.

With my clutzy fingers, tapping is the first thing I disabled. I have yet to encounter a touchpad that is compatible with me. I need a presspad(one that moves prior to responding = TRUE tactile feedback).

Thank You to all who responded during this wild goose chase. At least we got a few goose eggs along the way.

Be careful with Lenovo hardware. There have been multiple instances where they have been caught with pre-installed spyware, bloatware and even rootkits on their laptops. IF you don't believe me, just Google it. These had been widely publicized in the past, but have probably faded into memory for many. I don't trust that company at all...

Well the verdict is in. All this confusion was caused by Lenovo by not having a physical right button switch. A wireless mouse behaves as it all did in W10 . . . .(so far anyway).

Wish I had known two days ago.
