That is some serious burn depth into the boards. It makes me wonder how it was allowed to burn so long to get that deep. You are probably correct about them still being strong enough. It's really nice you are able to save those boards. I have done that too when possible. Flipping them over does make for a better finished surface.

This project has kind of forced me to experiment with just about every chemical legal to purchase. I have used Evaporust as seems to be the favorite here, as well as naval jelly, muratic acid, degreaser of every flavor, pb blaster, holy water, you name it. I’d like to say i have a favorite but it really depends on what’s being cleaned. For the nuts and bolts, and anything I was impatient for, quick muratic acid baths worked best but required neutralizing in baking soda. Naval jelly worked great on the flat surfaces like the legs. Evaporust gave the best clean shine and was really good on the way tubes using the pvc method to soak them in. All of them required some elbow grease so the lesson I learned was that there is no easy way out of half a century of grime and rust.

So, anti-oxidants do extend one's lifetime! Nice work you're doing

Something I have used successfully is vinegar. It takes longer but is not as acidic as others. I have used it for larger parts including Way Tubes inside a PVC pipe I have capped the ends of just for that use.

So I picked up a second 10er for parts but it’s parked in Boise 3 hrs away from me. Had my old man pick up all the parts that were loose while he was visiting the area. One of the things he came back with was this jointer. After looking through the jointer related threads, it seems like this is perhaps an oddball jointer? The guard is completely different from the magna guard I’ve seen. Can someone fill me in on what this is….aftermarket jointer perhaps?

Although I cannot identify the manufacturer of that one it is not a Magna/Shopsmith Jointer. Magna/Shopsmith are not the only Jointers available. Are there any other markings on it elsewhere besides the DANGER sticker? It certainly has seen better days.

Another thing you can use is oxalic acid. Add it to water, stir and soak the parts. Don't use a power tool with a brush as it creates fumes you do not want to breathe. This is the main ingredient in Barkeeper's Friend. I created a paste to remove black rust from way tubes as well as red/brown rust from iron and steel. Great for rusted cast iron. I bought 5 lbs. about 5 years ago for <$10 but think it's about $20 now. You can order less if you want.

I have only been able to find the numbers 2431 31 followed by a “U” in a box. I actually found the U stamp in a couple spots. The backside of the fence has what appears to be “Er” , assuming as in 10-ER but it could be EP….Have parts soaking in evaporust so maybe I’ll unearth some more. The danger sticker is actually a metal plate riveted to the guard.
