I do believe there is a vast fluctuation in price by region. It seems that in the midwest where most have a shop in the basement, everyone wants to start out at around $350 for a Mark V while some think there is a $800 or $1500 starting point. There seem to be far fewer that are rusted. In states like Florida, units can be had for far less, but are more heavily corroded. There also seem to be more of them. I'm not familar with the Southwest areas, but postings on this forum seem to indicate that there are reasonable buys to be had there also.

The pricing also gets confused by the Mark V vs. 10E & ER models. I've seen people asking for $800 for a 10ER. I didn't pursue it, but it also had been cared for. I've also seen 10ER's locally for $100 that were corroded. They never responded to my offers, feeling the machine was worth that even though it was stuck on the Way tubes. Sellers don't understand that the 10ER's are obsolete and the parts supplier is eBay or machine it.

In summary, IMHO prices are higher in the Midwest than in the sunshine retirement areas with uneducated sellers setting prices by confusing obsolete and current models.

I live in the southeast and don't seem to run into many for sale locally. Also on e-bay the great deals always seem to be in the north and in California.

Mark, I always find the ebay stuff to be in the mostly in the N.E. part of our great land. I know they THINK they're smart over there, so I give them a break due to SS, but the ones out here in Sunny Cal all seem to have a bit too-much-of the-dollar in mind when they post, although I have picked up a good deal after much hunting.

Here in the desert southwest, things are not so likely to rust. Therefore, everyone thinks that what they have to sell is "just like new". Real deals are few and far between. You really have to be looking - they don't just fall into your lap.

In Virginia several Mark V's show up priced anywhere from $850 to $3,500. Over several weeks the prices tend to sort themselves down to between $850 and $1,500 given the model and condition. I haven't seen one sell at $1,500 recently. In fact it seems with the current economy few are selling at all.I paid $850 for what looked like a decent 510 in early April. Given the actual condition, the missing parts and degree of labor required to make it top notch it is possible I paid too much. I am looking for another Mark V and plan to pay less for it as I intend to create an OPR stand from it and won't need the head stock or extra's. fjimp

I monitor all of the craigslist postings for the So-Cal area (Ventura down to San Diego) and for some odd reason find that San Diego prices are much higher than anywhere in the greater LA area. Frequently I'll see someone selling a setup that is $1500 or higher -- sometimes >$2k.. Now, some of these appear to be very recent models and perhaps that's more a governor of the price. I also see frequent ads for 10ERs for $600+ which I find amusing. Occasionally I'll find someone selling a MKV for <$200 as well.. Unfortunately I don't see many of the attachments very often such as the surface planer or others along those lines...

I watched the ads for several weeks before purchasing a used 500. I looked on eBay and Craig's List. As others have pointed out, it does appear that much like real estate, location is everything. My thought on this is that many sellers are unwilling or unable to ship the SS out of market so it sells much like a house would...local demand.

I see basic B-stock Mark Vs listed for $1200 to $1800 in markets like Nashville, Indy and Chicago. While I'm 2, 3 and 6 hours away from these markets, respectively, I was able to buy a C-stock Mark V with jointer and band saw in SW Indiana for $600.

Nothing ground breaking here, just info for you.

Congrats on your new purchase guitarnut. For that price, it was worth the ride. That is such a great deal I would have driven from San Diego.

I bought mine in February for $1500 and from what I've seen that is some what high.
