Yeah, I got them out today. Base is all cleaned up and back together.

Tore down the headstock today. The good news is that everything looks good. I don’t think I need bearings anywhere and it all looked pretty clean. The bad news is that I can’t get the quill to retract properly. (To be honest I hadn’t tried it before teardown as nothing ran.)
The issue seems to be an air lock in the plastic spline receiver that resists both pulling and pushing. I tried lubricating with oil but that just made the seal better. Shouldn’t this be vented somewhere? Does anything look wrong here?
To clarify it moves easily both in and out with the quill feed but just presents too much resistance for the spring to snap it back in like it should. The spring is fully wound.

Interesting! That would mean an air seal on both the quill spline AND the drive sleeve splines. I consider that very unusual!
Fully wound is also 'unusual'. I wonder if the spring is truncated(short). Or somehow, otherwise weak.
