Well I got it all put back together and what a PITA to get the end with the handle that holds the table level. Wheels work but only at the level that is supposed to be 1/2 inch. Some of the people that responded got way off subject?????? I hope to be soon producing things for craft shows. I recently retired and soon will be enjoying wood working.......thank you everybody

Trim the bench tubes to eliminate the gap in the way tubes

I would go the opposite direction and add a spacer(3/8" ?) at each end. Any material will do and a simple plug will suffice. Easiest may be a slice off a pvc pipe slit to allow correct od.

Do you mean at the highest step and it drags at the first step? There isn't a lot of play there between the holes in the legs and the holes in the Retractable Caster Assemblies. You could try to loosen the bolts with the Casters Retracted (up) and let them go to the lowest point they sit in the holes then retighten. This may help or there may be other reasons for it to drag on the 1st step.

Glad you were able to get it reassembled correctly after mixing up the tubes. It is easy to get things turned around reassembling these tools. I have done so myself.

Interesting to hear. It makes sense for Shopsmith. There is one disadvantage to the double tilt, you don't have a fixed end on the left side to leave SPTs attached. I keep a band saw on the left side all the time. It's not practical to tilt the way tubes in either direction with it still in place.

At the 1/4 inch setting on the legs just barely get off the ground. 1/2 inch setting on the legs and can move it around no problem. It just leaves me feeling it is not put together correctly. I saw one video where to way tubes were adjusted with nothing on the tubes and set screws for the way tubes are hidden, you have to put the way tubes in the upright position to access the set screws. I have a good drill press and will not be putting the smith in the upright position to drill anything because the way tubes will fully seat themselves and I cannot set the screws in the proper setting. If I ever take all the things on the way tubes off maybe I will tighten the set screws in the proper location. Not a lot out there on how to properly put a shopsmith back together or from scratch. Even Shopsmith does not give the specs between the way tubes and bed tubes but shows different part numbers. I just want to operate my shopsmith safely and enjoy wood working in my retirement.

Yes, there is a definite lack of information throughout the official Shopsmith documentation. They have published very few numeric details.

If you search this forum, however, you will find much of that missing detail.

On my machines (three of them) the distance between the castings ( the length of exposed bench tubes) is just a tad over 48.25". I'll look for a couple threads that discuss this. Reible did an excellent thread showing how he assemblies the castings and tubes.
