I recommend oval tip set screws. Not easy to find, but they eliminate the taper angle/set screw bore angle concern.

As for the chuck, it maybe a good starter, but not likely a keeper.

I have 3 oneway chucks that have TB and I love them. Makes it easy to spin to change size. When I moved to 3520, all I had to do was change the internal adapter from the SS.
To each his own. >-) however.

I still consider myself a novice at woodturning, but have produced several bowls and salt & pepper mills that turned out well on this chuck. I have the original Nova G3 chuck and I have been happy with it the past few years. The Pro-Tek is just a newer version as I understand it. We discussed what was different with the Pro-Tek version in the thread linked below. Biggest change is essentially they changed the tighten/loosen direction. For some this will come more natural now, but for others be a pain - depends on whether the jaws are clamping down on something to hold or need to expand to grip the inside of a tenon, e.g. on bottom of a bowl, etc. One downside with the newer Pro-Tek version is they use star fasteners to hold the chuck jaws on, whereas the old one used 5/32" hex ones. I have the original G3, so that is one perk, IMHO, because I can use the same 5/32" hex wrench from my Mark V with the Nova G3. It really isn't a big deal because you don't take the jaws on/off that frequently though.

I'd strongly suggest that you buy one with the t-handle tightener, rather than the two 'tommy bars'. I have one of each and really dislike having to use the two bars to lock the workpiece.

A problem with tommy bars it it requires two to get the job done.



One them always seems to get lost when you need to use them.

This is kinda what I am looking for.

As a Machinist I am familar with Metal lathe chucks.

Just not familar with wood lathe chucks yet.

Is this the key to the Nova G3 chuck in the second link I posted?
