You guys are so much smarter than me I can hardly believe it. Last year I bought a complete extension (not floating) table. I find it works great to have one on both ends of the 520 when working with longer stock. fjimp

On the headstock, I would speculate the whole unit began as a Mark V 500, and someone later replaced the headstock with something newer? It happens now and then.
BTW, lately I compared 2 Mark V 500's (mine, and one I was rebuilding for a buddy). On my buddy's unit, it took a little bit more shimming and adjusting than usual to get the worktable perfectly aligned for sawing and drill-pressing. I finally traced it down to the 2 large bored holes in his 500-style carriage. One of the holes was just visibly offset compared to the other -- thus necessitating the corrections in the table attachment points on the trunnions. Something to keep in mind if you're wanting good precision; you may need to dedicate one particular table to any given carriage.
