The 73's are what prompted the question.

I think JPG was suggesting you might be a ham radio operator. I had to go luck up what "73" means in code for a ham operator to understand. Perhaps Wes was born in 1973? I never got into ham radio...I know strange considering I spent my career specializing in RF/Microwave communication (hence my screen name here). I do have fond memories of shopping ham radio swap meets back when I was a youngling though. In the pre-online era, they were a good place to shop for computer parts, ham radio gear and generally any electronic parts, etc. I bought my VARIACĀ® from one of these swap meets. Hope your pork butt turned out well. I am also a fellow BBQ guy, but too hot in Phoenix area to smoke anything in the summer time unfortunately. Welcome to the forum!

Ahh, that makes sense! Not a ham radio guy, but have friends that used to love that.

To follow up the original question, I disassembled the quill and pinion shaft yesterday. Everything looks good, spring intact. Lots of friction in spring housing, took a small file and smoothed the edges of the housing where it rotates then spray lubed with some dry lubricant, helped. I did realize I am missing the domed washer that goes on the pinion shaft inside the headstock, so I will order that from the mothership.

Does anyone have a part number for that domed washer? It is part number 53 on the exploded parts diagram.
