I was just re-reading some of the posts here. Made me think of something that happened last year. I took another turning class at the local community college and brought my work home to finish on my SS. I noticed a lot of vibration and thought it was the waytubes that were the culpurit. I put my SS planer on the left hand side and clamped it down. I thought the added weight and tension would stop it. That stopped a lot of it for me.
I mounted a large piece of fire-wood last month on my shopsmith lathe and since I don't have a speed reducer I took my draw knife and cut off the very large off round edges. It worked pretty well and when I finally turned it on it didn't vibrate very much.
