My oldest ER has a cast iron headrest. Perhaps the easiest way to tell if it's an E or ER - if it's not obvious from the logo plate - is if the quill feed spring housing has a depth indicator. The E just had a smooth round housing. The depth indicator for the quill feed was one of the changes introduced with the ER.

Later ERs had an aluminum headrest.
