I vaguely remember someone mounting a tail stock on a wall to the right height of the Shopsmith. Turned the side that was over the tubes. Flipped it around and did the other side. I would post a link but I cant remember where I seen it.

Longbed SS ?

Considering the tubing is centerless ground I'm afraid it would most likely be more money than what most might want to spend. I'll see about getting some prices and source for some 8' long tubes.
Please let us know about any prices you find. I was quoted $100 per 10' tube as the lowest I could find locally. Thanks.

Nick is the culprit! I do not remember WHERE either(it IS in a post on this forum).

He tells of attaching a tailstock to the wall and aligning the ss and work piece to it and as has already been said, flip the workpiece end for end to turn the second half.

A guy on eBay had a frame(legs, bench & way tubes only) for $90. It was a buy it now that ended some time ago. You may want to contact him - his id is ram12654. Good luck.

If this is true, it's probably the cheapest route to take, providing you can get a used SS for a good price. It wouldn't even need to have a headstock.

Just found this for another thread. Nick tells us how...here.

I think Dusty has the right idea to stager the joint and also the inside tubes should be as long as posible to reduce the flexing.
