I received my first leatherman back in the early 90's as a gift. I loved it, but the blades didn't really lock back then. I even had my name and county employee number engraved on it in case I lost it. I carried it on many Scout outings and made good use of it, until one of the kids borrowed it and snapped off a good portion of the knife tip. When I bought a new model, my wife carried the first one around in her purse for a long time. She carried it for so long that she forgot it was in there. The TSA guards reminded her that it was in there while on our way through LAX. Needless to say, it's gone now.
There was a posting too that some of the componets of the Leatherman tool are foreign made. Within the last 6 months to a year, there was a cable show that showcased the inventor and his factory. I think it was "Cool Tools" on DIY, but it could have been "How it's Made" on Discovery. The show definately gave the impression that the entire tool was manufactured right here in the states still.

I am truly a Leatherman fan. I have one in each car. I also carry the wave and I keep the Micra Leatherman in my Fly fishing vest.

I have several leatherman tools. One that is comletely taken apart as it rusted so badly I needed to clean it and decided after taking it apart that it had died and gone to leatherman heaven. Every single one of the models I have had has rusted badly. When I sent one of my models back to the factory for a new knife blade what i got back was the same damn blade that had just been reground into a point again and much shorter than original. Why could they not just replace the blade??? or the whole tool I know they don't cost them much. I wear mine on my belt and it goes fishing with me on the boat. Well stainless steel in Leatherman terms is definitely not a high grade of stainless as they rust horribly if they even look at salt water and yes I have washed them and rinsed them after being out on the boat. I love their tools but I am not impressed with their customer service nor their supposed stainless steel construction. PLus the ones i got many years ago were so much better made and felt better than the current crop. They also opened and closed much easier and better than the new ones.
