Interesting thread - reading between the lines: if you want a lathe chuck that has the quality that we expect with our SS, we use use something other than the Barracuda with an separate adapter. Or at least that is my take on this discussion. It seems that the Penn State adapter suffers from several factors: poor quality and the use of an adapter puts the lathe chuck that much farther out on quill and farther from the bearings - all this means extra vibration and general "it could be better".

I think this is good information and one major reason while I will look much more seriously at a chuck which fits directly on the SS shaft.
