Not far off. I attended a day long lecture by Roy Underhill and at the end he dug into his chest of woodworking oddities and pulled out a long thin piece of red and one of white oak and asked how to tell the difference between them. He put the wood into a glass of water and tried to blow through them like a straw. He was able to blow bubbles with the red oak.
Thanks all for the guesses on the ID of my mystery wood. I'm filling those pores.
