Al, thanks for the measurements. Out of curiosity, what method are you using to hold your chuck-key and hex wrench to the front of the headstock in your first picture?

I use a 1" square rare earth magnet, with a rubber pad glued to the back, stuck to the motor pan. It really grabs the hand tools and keeps them handy.

Bump up from last year. Sorry.
My first ER was an updated E model, and I had the E model aux table support as well as the E tailstock. Didn't have the plywood aux table, or I would have left everything alone.
I bolted a piece of plywood to the support bracket, with holes drilled in it, to hold the lathe tools. Since I've got the ER tailstock on the right end, the lathe tool holder goes on the headstock end.
This is now on my baby brother's machine. I've now got 2 ER tailstocks, with ext tables. But, my lathe machine has a Mk5 headrest, so I need to fabricate something new. Maybe, I'll remove an ER aux table from the bracket, and put a piece of ply there, to hold lathe chisels. That way I'll have the aux table to adapt to a Mk5 bracket, for the head end.

Thaty is one nice looking chisel rack but for the life of me, I can't see what holds the chisels from falling through the rack. I know I am missing something but I can't figure out what is holding them up. Please tell me the secret so I can make one like it.
Trust me, they don't fall through

I made this rack after seeing one at a live demo (remember those?) several years ago. I made it from memory with some scrap stock.
The "top" 2 dowels are spaced just slightly narrower (front to back) than the chisel handle. This forces the handle to rest on a dowel by the collar.
The bottom 2 dowels are spaced (front to back) just wide enough to allow the chisel bit to slide between them. They are all lined up so the chisels stand straight up.
I made it slightly wider (dowel length) than the 5 chisel set so I could add a couple additional if I want to.
