What you are describing is a 510. :)

I sorta caught onto that, Francis, but in a 500 configuration what holds onto the dowels? I see the clamps but those would not be acceptable in an operational setup. Someone with machine shop skills could make a bundle of useful attachments for the 500.

I basically wanted to indicate that the concept was valid since it is pretty much what Shopsmith did to make the 510. I just didn't say it well.
The attack has to be different as far as where the tubes mount or the 500 fence would be a problem. The configuration shown is probably about right.
As you say the attachment is the only problem and it should be fairly easy to do. Just as a quick thought I thought about a set of "D" shaped hangers that would attach to the table edges sticking down and the center of the "D" would be sized to fit the dowels/tubes. The part below the bottom of the table could be thick enough to hold a smooth tipped setscrew with a knob. I'm not describing it well... I can see it but words are failing.

This would be a good place too for one of the removable carriages I want to make. Just slap on an extra carriage and drop in an extension table.

I have a herd of things I want to do but I have been fighting a knee problem since late summer and have spent almost no time in the wood shop. I did walk through it tonight. :(
I did get ambitious last week and replaced a rear tractor tire. Paid for it for 3 days.
We are having a problem here with a lack of numbers on the thermometer this month but I think I will go down tomorrow and build up a fire in the stove and at least sweep the floor.

To clamp on to pipes you could use kee klamps or something similar. Just a thought.
