I recently bought a used Shopsmith, and saw the fan shieve problem described here. Thanks for your excellent post, I have everything apart ready to get squared away and your information was very useful.

For what it is worth, in my case the fan shieve set screw had been loose for so long that the key had followed the curve at the end of the slot, and fatigued and broken out a section of the floating shieve. Oh, and my unit had no spacer behind the fan shieve either.

It seems like everyone who owns a Shopsmith should assume that set screw is loose and go in and use loc-tite on it and avoid inevitable troubles.

Question: How can I tell I am ordering the new, thicker spacer? It's just #124, no options... can I assume I will get the latest part?

Yes, I have gotten the thicker spacer the last few times I ordered it. Customer Service person, Linda, has known what I wanted each time as there is no part number in the catalog.

thanks for the good information I took my spring apart and surprise of all surprises there was no spacer #124 between the fan sheave and the motor casing. Also the "set Screw" was missing. The fan sheave has gouged into the motor casing at the hub and the tip regions. I am preparing a presentation to send out soon.

To add a piece of information for others it looks like the keys should be lined up with the hole in the motor pan bottom to access it.
