My main thought was to have a reverse for sanding situations on the lathe. However, you do bring out an good point as there were several situations Ive run across in the moulding and millwork business that did indeed call for changing the direction of the knife and the rotation of the cutterhead for a smoother cut (Up-milling Vs Down-milling) as a means of reducing tearout, especially when cutting a groove.
