nuhobby has actually hit on a major difference in dust collection methods between the flat disk and the conical disk. When sanding with the conical disk, and sliding the workpiece across its front face, the dust is primarily coming off the sandpaper in a 90°]downward[/color] as the part first hits the sanding to disk to directly horizontal (back toward your face) as it passes by the vertical centerline. For a conical disk dust collector to work effectively, it would have to encompass the 180° front (toward operator) of the disk, from the vertical centerline back toward you. The standard dust collector / bottom saw guard encompasses the bottom 180°. Rotating it 90° clockwise (viewed front the paper side) would be required to effectively collect the dust. Everybody with me? Conical sanding dust management is a different beast.
I almost envision needing a standard dust chute / lower blade guard with a flip up chute the cover the 90° dust zone.

Not having tried the dust chute with a conical disk and dust collector, I cautiously submit the following:
Since the point of contact is on a 'vertical' line, the workpiece clears the rotating disk more at the front of the disk. This creates a path for the 'debris' and air flow down into the chute. Since the 'debris' tends to follow the disk(briefly until centrifugal forces take prevail) it is thrown into the air flow(??????)
Please somebody who 'knows' respond.
BTW This only applies to non-510/520 models!

On a skim pass, yes, the contact is on the vertical centerline. As you do a skim pass, the sawdust flies back toward you. When you use the disk to remove significant material, the contact is the horizontal line at table height, sanding the part at the 3+ degree angle of the 'cone'.
Next time I have it set up, I am going to watch more closely.
