The shaft is straight. I just thought the little bit of play in the Drive and Ring part would have something to do with it.

Truthfully, I think I might have been looking for an excuse to tear down and replace (rebuild) as much as I could without spending any money (not already spent). This was a headstock that was given to me and I decided to use it as a learning experience. It now runs as sweet and quiet as any Shopsmith Mark V.

The original machine was noisy and I did not know why - and I still really do not know why. Probably the only way to ascertain would be to put the suspect parts back into a machine one at a time.

I'll do that with the next Mark V that someone contributes to my self betterment.
