I'm all for repurposing SS stuff - but at the point of just using the tubes...why not just use something like metal chainlink fenceposts or something like that? I would bet they are cheaper than getting way tubes off of ebay.

Question be, how straight are they? The ss ones were ground straight(originally).

Another option for tubes:
I am making a drill press out of SS500 pieces and needed the way tubes. Since I thought cost plus shipping would be high, I bought 1-3/4"od by 1-9/16" id by 52" mechanical tubing from a local metal supplier, so I have the tubes "right now". EDIT: found out headstock and carriage slide on fine on this tubing but it is about .005" too big in diameter to slide into the hinged base or the tie bar so keep in mind if you have no means to reduce the diameter at the tube ends.END EDIT In the end the two tubes cost $50 so I likely did not save much (anything?) over Ebay, etc. The supplier said they brought that tubing in for local race car builders to use as roll bar material.
If this option works for you, you could get, say 60" long ones and span over a 4 ft. sheet.
