Hey Bill, that’s so sweet to say that your bride wants to gift u a chuck. I have a Nova chuck and am really satisfied with it. I would recommend the Nova because I have seen that with many of my friends. So by that you can know that it is a very useful chuck.

thanks hwee00!! she's put up with me for 43 years and i couldn't ask for anything more!! i'm going to check that out. we have a Wood Craft over in north Orlando...

i was in woodcraft today and they have a nove midi chuck with six sets of jaws for $129.00. the nove midi will not fit a shopsmith out of the box as it comes with either a 1"x8tpi thread or a 3/4"x16tpi thread. nova does not have an adapter for the midi chuck. however pennstate industries has a 5/8" plain by 1"x8tpi adapter that will work. i use this setup. it would add $20 plus shipping to your total.

Thanks, Bob! that narrows the search down. i really appriciate your sharing the experience! i'm almost finished making some faceplates for very small turning. the ones i made twenty years ago started coming apart as the epoxy has aged too much.

you are welcome. i forgot to mention that i do use the nova chucks and i am happy with their performance ( two midi's, one original nova, a G3 and a super nova 2). with the pennstate adapter i also use a collet chuck and pennstates new drive center set is a great addition.

I have the Talon Stronghold made for the shopsmith. The extra weight translates into smoother cuts and less vibration. Because the lathe runs smoother, there is less wear and tear, not more. The startup load is not measureably affected. Automotive engineers have long used heavy weights on the front of car engines, (vibration dampners) trucks too, to lessen vibration, not only for comfort, but to stop the engine from beating itself to pieces. I use the stronghold even when using the pen mandrel, I mount it on the opposite output shaft, it stabilizes my cuts and translates into smoother finishes, less sanding. Shopsmith also makes a very heavy holder for the toolrest, for the specific purpose of dampening vibration, more mass, less vibration.

My wife presented me with a gift and instructions to spend the $115 for a new Nova G3 chuck for the SS, and I ordered this AM. Ulterior motive for her - she wants the 380 year old Bur Oak pieces in the driveway made into bowls and platters. I can't wait for a warm spell now, so I can oblige her. I got the chuck on Fleabay for $115 shipped free w/ the right adapter for Shopsmith included with the chuck.

I got the Nova G3 with 6 extra chucks for Christmas Also, She got it from the Woodcraft Black Friday add. The woodcraft here has the bar chuck and the G3 since the add had the wrong picture and she knew I wanted the Key G3 so Woodcraft here let her have that one.
Can hardly wait to use it. Hope everyone had a nice Christmas and got a lot of good wood items.

thanks to each and every one of ya'll!!! i have the penn state pen mandrel and have the live center and SS 5/8 to 1 X 8 tpi collet on order. i'll start with this and go easy to seek a level for me for some projects coming up..
