Which Shopsmith model do you use in your shop
I now have two even though one has been sufficient for my needs over these many years. It seems that there may be a bug that is infesting Shopsmith owners.
Correction: The original quill was single bearing and later upgraded to a two bearing quill.

I have three early 80's vintage 500's that have been converted to 520. Two are in the Upper Peninsula and my original '83 machine is with me here in Gainesville.
The Gainesville Shopsmith was converted to Power Pro in October. One of the U.P Shopsmiths will receive this conversion when I get back U.P. there in April.

Good to know. I'll have to fix that. I guessed it was just an indicator, never suspecting it had more functionality.JPG40504 wrote:FWIW, The speed release lever(mounted under the switch and now resting on the top outside of the speed dial) should be behind the speed dial. It is supposed to provide a high speed limit(just above 'saw-joint') that is overridden by depressing that release lever. That button on it rides in the groove in the back of the speed dial. Itsa PITA if you go to rout speeds often. It also functions as an anti-rattle spring.

My 520 is probably a 500 carriage, a replacement headstock from 2004, and 520 tables off of a 510 that was upgraded to a 520 =)

I also just noticed what appears to be a large washer between the quill lock wing nut and the headstock casting. How come? The locking is accomplished by pressing against the domed washer inside! PM me if confused!fiatben wrote:Good to know. I'll have to fix that. I guessed it was just an indicator, never suspecting it had more functionality.

I currently have two 520's. One I purchased new and recently upgraded it with the Power Pro. The second a fiftieth Anniversary 510 was purchased used and upgraded to a 520.
I appear to be with two weeks of moving into my new shop and will actually be able to mount the Power Pro and use all my coveted tools. Fjimp
