I don't recall ever seeing a two-jaw chuck for a lathe. What would it be used for? The only two-jaw chuck I recall is one used on a hand brace.

Keep in mind the 4 jaw come in two varieties - independent jaw and self centering(spiral). Also there are those made for metal working and those intended for wood turning. The wood variety are usually self centering and can have jaw 'sets' for different gripping needs.

They are used to hold square blocks of briarwood for turning tobacco pipe shapes. Yes a 4 jaw will work also. A 3 jaw will not.
go to the timeline of 1:14 to see a 2 jaw lathe chuck. The entire vid is 10 minutes. If you want to see a pipe being made (IMO in a crude fashion) but still with great results, watch the entire video.The guy is a bit barbaric in his methods and I saw a few safety issues.

If you are really looking for a 2 jaw lathe chuck then you might have to order it from MSC. They are rarely used if ever in woodworking and for very specific purposes in metal work to hold irregular objects.
I went with a 3 jaw chuck for both metal and wood. A 4 jaw, scroll chuck would be a good choice. The prices are not cheap and quality is in the ease of travel of the scroll. Make sure you get one that has a 1 inch 8tpi backplate to accept the adapter from Penn State Ind.
