Any hammer will do, but ball peen hammers have better 'balance' for hitting pinches(flat side only:D). Oh and then there is the de rigor of mechanics's tools vs carpenter's tools vs mason's tool ...!;)

P.S. The direction of driving is important. Make sure all is lined up so maximum force is towards (re)moving the pin.

I also have a stuck arm pin on the base. I attached of a photo of it. I don't think it is lined up properly at all, as it is off to one side. I know I am supposed to drive it thought but I don't want to flare it or bend it any further. Should I realign it to the center somehow before hammering it through?[ATTACH]12372[/ATTACH]

Get a nice set of pin punches and all of your troubles will be solved! I bought a nice set cheap at Harbor Freight for less than $20 there are cheap chinese punches but they work fine and didn't break the bank and I got 10-15 punches in the assortment. They have been used on every SS rebuild to date and have never let me down. They make the job of getting the pins out an easy one for sure. Your picture in the last post is hard to determine what the problem is? Is the pin bent? I have on occassion had to punch the pins out from the opposite direction in order to get them to move properly. In the worst case scenario you could just cut it off if possible and just replace it. A better picture would be helpful in the last example.

The 'off to the side' is not likely a problem. Try driving the hinge pin(The roll pin goes through it) so the roll pin is 'centered' in the hole. Alternatively run(by hand) a small drill bit shank into the center of the roll pin. That should let you know if the roll pin is bent.

I do not think the roll pin is bent.

Hi.. Thanks for the replys.

Does anyone have a diagram of this? I thought there was only one pin. There's a roll and a hinge pin? I tried Googling this type of pin and didn't come up with much.

The roll pin is the one you see in your picture. The hinge pin is the large rod that you are trying to get the roll pin out of.

The roll pin that secures the base arm pin in the base might be longer than you expect it to be. It is 1 1/2" long and is 5/32" in diameter.

I believe the pin in the lower right of this photo image (referenced in post #8 this thread) is the one in question.

I think that it is the hinge pin on the base end not the caster assembly.

Yes, Sorry about the confusion, and switching topics to the arm pin

I am having trouble getting all of the pins out. I bought a nice set of pin punches and have used lots of penetrating oil. So far I have gotten two of the pins out on the left caster. The ones on the right won't budge.

As far as the arm pin on the base. I smashed the pin, to the point where the pin actually split and then smooshed into the hole. I have no idea how to get it out now. I have been trying to drill it out with no success. I am even considering drilling an access hole through the other side of the base to try to punch it back the other way.

The problem I guess is that these pins haven't moved in 55 years and they are rusted. I found changing the bearings much easier than removing these pins. I don't get why they would use these pins. why not just a set screw or some other easily removable device

I am stuck. especially with the base arm pin. I am gonna go whack at the casters some more
