This sounds like a science class question combined with shop class.

What happens when two different metals remain in contact with one another undisturbed for long periods of time?

And

What happens when tools are not used correctly? Specifically, an allen wrench used without be seated deeply into the socket?

Yes, the allen screw might have been low quality too.

The Shopsmith branded chuck might have been a quality item that was used and abused by someone who could not answer either of those questions and he rid himself of it using the auction.

Both of my chucks are Shopsmith branded. That reminds me, I better check the set screws. The allen wrench is okay; I just recently ground down the tip to clean up the edges.

Another big part of machine condition is a result not only of maintenance but of environment. A good bit of that depends to some extent on where you live and what kind of shop building you have. In my mechanics/farm shop I constantly battle condensation from a high humuggity climate with a lot of wide temperature swings. The worst is when a door is open and a lot of warm wet air (sometimes of the year almost fog) rushes in and flows over much colder metal. I have a full sized blacksmiths anvil that will at times have water streaming down its sides. In its case it doesn't have many moving parts. :D
My wood shop is much better for several reasons. It is much tighter, I almost never "have" to work on something with a big overhead door open and I am now keeping low level heat in it 27-7. I will BTW keep that heat running all spring unless I pick up another dehumidifier to use in there. As it gets warmer I will be running AC in there (cooling and drying, not refrigerating).

BTW, there is a third factor to that dissimilar metals equation. "In the presence of moisture" (even at very low levels).

I scrolled back up to see where Wannabewoodworker lived when I saw those ice-scrapers hanging beside his garage door. :)

Yes I live about 2 min. from the water (salt) and it is usually pretty wet but this winter it was very dry. The allen wrench seems to work fine on every other setscrew on the machine and the fit in the setscrew of the chuck was not sloppy??? The thing just spun as soon as I tried to remove it. It was not something I was expecting for sure. I am going to check the SS allen wrench and make sure it isn't worn too much if so I will also grind it some to get back to nice sharp edges but I still think it was a crappy setscrew in there. No biggie I will get me some cutoff wheels and finish the removal procedure and call it good. At least I have a second quill I can swap from the Mark V and still use the Mark VII if need be.
