Trapping cuttings and just being too hard on it is entirely different IMHO. I could see that becoming a problem but also an easy fix. Tightening the locks too much and stripping the threads would be what I was referring to.

Thanks to everyone for their help.
I am not sure how the wedge got jammed, but it is now working properly and the headstock is back in place. And lubricated for the first time in 29 years.....
The insides were not particularly mucked up, the belts look good, the only rust was on the power take off adapters. I am not sure it sounds any better, but I think the first cut through 3/4 plywood was smoother than the last before disassembly.
