I like the idea of making my own cabinets. I actually have a very nice set of bits from Rockler designed for the inlay on cabinets, still new and sealed in the waxy plastic.
I may tackle that but my wife would not be so forgiving as to let me stretch it out over 4 years. She wants things done now, not over a long span. I insulated our bedrooms and hallway earlier last year before winter with blown in fiberglass. It took me 3 months working full time to patch 98 three inch holes and repaint all 3 rooms. At the 1 month mark, she was wanting to hire in a professional contractor to finish it all. I think 4 years is out of the question.

I understand the desire to move things along. And I'm sure it could be done in far less time than I took.spiderclimber wrote:I like the idea of making my own cabinets. I actually have a very nice set of bits from Rockler designed for the inlay on cabinets, still new and sealed in the waxy plastic.

But there is no doubt that doing it yourself saves money, gives you exactly the kitchen you want without compromise, increases the value of you home, all while letting you work on your Shopsmith. Not too bad.
Technically it's still not done. I just finished putting up the back-splash a few weeks ago. Part of that was on her shoulders. She was months deciding on just the right colors for the tile.
I still have a wine cabinet to build. Lucky me!

I painted our kitchen cabinets in our old house about three years ago. I did it so it would look good for selling. I took all the doors off and removed all of the hinges and knobs. The first thing I did was really cleaned them well using TSP. I then sanded them to create a little tooth or grit for the paint to stick to. I used oil-based primer first. I can't remember if I used oil-based or acrylic paint for the top coat. I then got new hinges and knobs and it turned out pretty good. It looked a lot better than before.
