Well just as an update I finished my little compartment project for the leaning post on my boat. It came out acceptable but as I am extremely anal it was not perfect and I am still learning the intricacies of "woodworking" in general. I used my Bosch router to create the rabbets for the sides and the ends. I only had a 3/4" straight bit so this had to be done in two passes on all of the pieces but it went as well as i could of expected. I wanted to use my Rigid TS 3650 and my dado blade but it doesn't make me feel all warm and fuzzy when i use it. It is a Mibro blade i bought at the local box store and although it does cut dadoes it doesn't do a very good job of it and it is a pain in the ass to setup not to mention the Rigid has a pretty short arbor so using it for wide dadoes is a bit on the scary side. I went with the 1" thick material I think mostly out of inexperience building things and I think now that it is done I could have gotten away with 3/4" material and cut 1/2" dadoes leaving 1/4" for the screws but I just wasn't sure not having done this before and doing it all from scratch with plans I made on Sketchup I was flying by the seat of my pants. This was just a basic box really with a couple of mounting ears on the ends to bolt it into the leaning post. As I said it came out passable and very functional which was the intent really it ain't fine furniture. I will try and take a couple of pics tomorrow.
