Rough cost of used Mark V 520?

Hi Patrick!, I'm Chuck!

Let me try to interpret our U.S. use of the King's English.;) Just Kidding, hey!!

I am sure Dusty intended to convey that a Mark V having an older 3/4 HP motor and a one bearing quill would not be as good of a deal as a used Mark V having a headstock with a 1 1/8 HP motor and a two bearing quill.

1 1/8 HP motors are in all units starting in 1962

Two bearing quills were added in 1984 (?).

I find the 3/4 HP motor and smaller tables are as powerful as the 510 & 520 upgrades. If you have a 500 or a 510 Shopsmith, I still have a few 520 Pro tables with rails, 520 fences and 520 carriages I do not have the extension or floating tables with 520 rails. I have some of the 520 upgrade parts available. I hope to have a double bearing Gilmer & Poly-V quill assembly available soon.

Charlese, thanks for your reply. So let me get this straight. Is a 520 (not an upgraded 500 or 510) always shipped with a 1-1/8HP motor and two-bearing quill? That would be my guess, since by my reading 520 was introduced in 1999.

My name is not Charlese but maybe this will help - since I ad a part in creating this confusion.

Any of the older models can be upgraded to any of the newer configurations by simply adding and/or removing the appropriate parts. So a 500 of yesteryear could become a 520 of today.

If you buy new, you will get what is described in the literature for the model you purchase.

If you buy used, it is necessary to check closely to know what you are buying or have bought.

Likewise, you can go backward but I don't know why you would do that.

Thank you Dusty and Chuck for that very helpful information. I'm looking at a lot of pictures from kijiji postings. I can recognize a 520 quite easily (with the red switch) -- only seen one of those recently. From just a front view of the headstock, can one say if it's a 500 or 510? I would imagine other characteristics (table size, etc) would allow an experienced eye to distinguish. I'll start seeing some in person tomorrow (yay!)

Hi Beeg,

Maybe I'm not using the right terminology. Just by looking at the front part of the headstock (where the speed control is), can one tell from a picture what model it is? The 520 is most definitely different (the red switch is quite obvious); the others I can't tell. But then again, someone experienced might also clue in to the table size, color, etc.

As beeg said, in any given year ("era") or on any production date you choose, all the SS models used the same headstock. All models of the year the the one you saw with a red switch was made, also had the red switch. They were all painted the same colour.

So to your question:"From just a front view of the headstock, can one say if it's a 500 or 510?" the answer is NO. The difference is revealed by the table rails and the fence.
