I have a 24'x30' garage, and yes - you can make that span without a center beam. I have attic space above and the joists are 2x10, 12" OC (probably could have gone 16" if there was no storage space above).
Definitely go with 24x24 - for resale value alone, as it could be converted to a 2-car garage. 20x20 would be a little tight.

Good point on the 24 x 37 ' building. While i would love the space is must be in keeping with my neighborhood planning and th total cost to build.

I found that out recently...had a mini cooper and a mitsubishi lancer. sold the lancer and got an explorer - wow, big difference. Parking the explorer in the garage is a lot different than either of the small cars

Don't over look possible code restrictions. I put in a 10'x20' shed for storage and could not go larger without a building permit.
My poor timing and lack of advance planning did not allow me to wait for a permit which can take FOREVER is you are waiting.

That is one nice thing about a gambrel roof. you can about double the space and especially if you do not put in any windows (until the dust settles) you can normally call it a one story building.
