yea, I guess it was all in my mind because I thought wixey only made digital protractors until beeg showed me the wixey angle thingie

I would suggest that you need two tools available for what you are doing (asking about).
A
sliding bevel and a
Wixey.

That is an old, old photo image. It is not a mini. It is a partially assembled Mark V with short pieces of EMT being used in lieu of way and bench tubes.
The object was to determine how those various pieces effected mechanical alignment of the head rest and base/base arm assembly with respect to one another.

I would think the 'crushability' of the EMT would be an undesirable trait. I made wooden plugs for the clamp ends on my 10' storage rack.(WIP still 'ip';))

All that I am/was doing is checking for alignment characteristics. My EMT pieces are about 4' long with only a carriage mounted; a lot different than 10' with all the SPT being supported.

I think the movement of the walls of the EMT would affect both alignment and stability(of parts positioning) regardless of the 'load' or length.
What were your 'conclusions'?

If you want(or think you need) dead on alignment, the head rest and base must set flat on a level surface and the bench and way tubes must all be level and parallel when (before) you secure the tubes.
Even after securing the tubes, when you move the assembled unit, the head rest may be twisted out of position (with respect to the base). The assembled unit will THEN not set flat on the bench top (level surface). It titters.
BOTTOM LINE: Unless your Mark V does not get moved around, it is not likely that you will maintain "dead on" alignment. But remember, we are not doing precision milling]14842[/ATTACH]
This shows just one of many measurements I made on the tubes. Checking in many locations on both the bench and way tubes (both horizontal and vertical), I concluded that absolute 0 was unachievable and unreasonable to expect.
