A LOT of surprises for me as well!
As for being shocked, maybe you got too close to Dusty's Airborne patch.

If it is shocking - I'll change it.
I think this is the patch appropriate for those one step up in the echelon (1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry) - I think. The previous avatar, which will return shortly, is the insignia for the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne) - I think. I have not been able to figure out all of these patches, tags, bumper stickers, etc. The chain of command is more complicated to say nothing of the multiplicity of units.

Smaller lightning bolt, but still there!
Keep this one, I like it! Reminds me of a jarhead rifle

Dusty,
I'm Air Force myself but just got back from a "Joint Expeditionary Tasking," working with the Army. I was one of about five Air Force guys working at an Army base in Iraq. We were with 2nd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division. I can't keep all the Army echelons straight either. I just know our letterhead said 2/82. Army are good people. Being on the ground keeps things in perspective for them.

The patch that he wears is that of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division (my current avatar). I have learned that much. They are currently somewhere in Afghanistan but that is about all I can nail down tight.
I understand that because I was in a unit whose mission was classified as well but that does not keep it from being frustrating.
I am also confused though. With all the restrictions about unit names, numbers and assignments - how are they able to communicate by Skype and email. I got a short message from him yesterday on Facebook so I know he is not in a foxhole somewhere (I think).

I skyped home everyday but kept my location out of the conversation. My family knew I was in Iraq, that was all.
Where they really get serious is about troop movements--the old "Loose lips sink ships" argument. That makes it tough on families because that's the one thing you REALLY want to tell them--when you're coming home. I couldn't say anything definite to my wife until I was in Bangor, Maine, even though I knew several weeks in advance when I was redeploying. Hang in there.
