This is probably the best way to describe snow to someone from warmer climes.

I was born and raised in So. Cal but lived in Rapid City S.D. for a couple of years. The below while funny is NOT an exaggeration especially the evil snow plow operator.

A Texan Moves North

January 10th:
It's 5:00pm and it's starting to snow. The first of the season and the first one we've seen in years. The wife and I took our hot buttered rum and sat by the picture window watching the soft flakes drift down, cling to the trees and cover the ground. It was beautiful.

January 11th:
We woke to a lovely blanket of crystal white snow covering the landscape. What a fantastic sight. Every tree and shrub covered with a beautiful mantle. I shoveled snow for the first time in my life and loved it. I did both driveway and sidewalk. Later, a snowplow came along and accidentally covered up the driveway with compacted snow from the street. The driver waved and smiled. I waved back and shoveled again.

January 12th:
It snowed an additional 5 inches last night and the temperature has dropped to 11 degrees. Several tree limbs have snapped from the snow. I shoveled the drive again. Afterward, the snowplow came again. Now the snow is brownish-gray.

January 13th:
It warmed enough today to cause slush which froze again when the temperature dropped. Bought snow tires for both cars. Fell on my azz in the driveway, $145.00 to the chiropractor. Nothing broken. More snow.

January 14th:
Still cold as hell. Sold the wife's car. Bought a 4x4 to get her to work. Slid into a guardrail anyway with considerable damage. Another 8 inches of snow last night. Both vehicles covered with salt and crud. More shoveling for me. The goddam snowplow came twice today. Grr!!

January 15th:
It's 8 freaking degrees outside. More freaking snow. Not a tree on our property that hasn't been damaged. Power was off most of the night. Tried to keep from freezing to death with candles and a kerosene heater, which tipped over and nearly burned the dam house down. Managed to put out the flames, but suffered 2nd degree burns on my hands plus lost all my eyelashes and eyebrows. Car slid off the road on the way to the emergency room, and totaled it.

January 16th:
More goddam white sh.it keeps coming down. Have to put on all the clothes we own just to get to the freaking mailbox. If I ever catch the son-of-a-bleep who drives that godforsaken snowplow, I'll tear open his chest and rip his heart out. I think he hides around the corner till after I've shoveled. Power is still off. Toilet froze. Roof has started to cave in.

January 17th:
Six more inches of this white crap and sleet and no telling what the hell else will happen. I wounded the snowplow azzhole with an ice ax, but he got away. Wife left me. The car won't start. I think I'm going snow-blind. I can't feel my dam toes, and I haven't seen the sun in weeks and more dam snow forecast. Wind chill is 22 below.

Dammit, I'm moving back to Texas!

I unner stand that! You left out the part about when in the following spring when the massive accumulation from all those multitudinous pretty snow flakes melted during the day and all that accumulated snow prevented the 'melt' from disappearing down into the storm drains and refroze the following night(s) with your means of transportation firmly gripped by several inches of snowmelt which has refrozen into a massive sheet of ice several inches thick!;)

Ho Ho Ho! Now that is why Santa rides in a sleigh!:D

MickyD used to do these potpourri threads. What has happened to him? Did a beautiful job on that old machine and a couple of projects and vanished.

I have wondering the same thing. I started them, but got tardy a couple of times and he jumped in and took care of my slowness.

The three musketeers in AZ I think drove him away. I had one pm response from him after he returned from AZ. Nothing since.

Miss Him!:(

I miss him as well, he was just getting into the woodworking part of the hobby so at least I hope he is keeping up with that. I was also looking forward to the pink shopsmith.

Well it could be he has some other things to deal with right now. That has happen to me a few time.

I think you may be referring to Gene, Dusty and me, no? I am still in occasional contact with Mike and he is alive and well albeit somewhat busy with ... you know, life. I'll drop him an email and let him know you are all pining for him and with any luck you'll see a post in this thread soon.

Today while enduring the placing of a temporary crown following a root canal, my dentist commented to his assistant that he had completed his Christmas shopping, she added that she had a great deal yet to do. The dentist asked if mine was finished to which I responded, yes Sir right here at the dentist office. I loved his gasp. Fjimp

Your shopping will be done when that dentist finishes cleaning out your wallet. Those crowns are very expensive.

Everybody must be really busy. Christmas cards will be completed today. Bills all caught up for the month, shopping done, decorations all in place. Now, back to some real serious sawdust making. Hope to have my latest project up by the first of next week.

[quote="dusty"]The comments that I read were widely varied but I had the impression that the majority favored some sort of action that would ultimately require flesh detection measures.

I remain impressed with the technology]

I'm all for safety, but safety begins (and ends) with the operator.

I'm sitting here wondering about the stats. Specifically, it just popped into my head to wonder how many people died using a wood lathe (remembering recent story of girl at university) versus using a table saw. For that matter, the number two accidental killer of people (after vehicles) is stairs. Should we start pushing for some kind of mandate that either outlaws stairs or requires some kind of technology to make them "people proof."

Whatever happened to personal responsibility for one's own actions?
