High Pitched Squeal while running

Motor Squealing Noise
Before removing the motor belt, check that the motor fan sheave is not rubbing on the motor on the bottom side. There should be at least a 1/16" or more clearance. I find a few loosen fan sheave set screws so I always use LocTite on this set screw when install the fan sheave.

There is a spacer on the shaft between the bearing and the fan sheave. Some were manufactured with a thin spacer that 'dug' into the fan sheave thus decreasing the clearance just mentioned by Bill.billmayo wrote:Before removing the motor belt, check that the motor fan sheave is not rubbing on the motor on the bottom side. In any event make sure to torque down when tightening the fan sheave to the motor shaft. If you decide to use loc-tite, make sure it is the blue, removable variety.

Bought a couple of bearings, new belt and we are back up and running. It was surprisingly easy to take apart the headstock, clean it all up, oil the sheaves properly, take off and press in the new bearings and put it all back together. There were plenty of posts that you can look back on to see how other people rebuilt their headstocks. Along with the on-line videos that are on the Shopsmith website it all was pretty easy. I can see why these machines last as long as they do. Thanks for all of your advice.
