I think you're exactly right, JPG. I just think it's really wedge over a half-century of use. Of course, the second part of that is the really tricky part as there aren't any good hardware stores left in these parts.

I only have an ACE hardware store even near to me these days. The two really old fashion hardware stores in our town have closed in the last couple of years. They were quite a trip down memory lane each time I visited them.

I order almost all my hardware (all of the stainless steel items) from http://www.mcmaster.com/#. A maximum of 3 days delivery when ordered, many times, only 2 days delivery from Atlanta, GA. I am amazed at the various items stocked by them. Some times, finding the proper item name has been my problem. However, they display pictures of their items as I work the indexes under each major heading.

Yeah, I'm kinda excited to have another old tool up and running. They seem to be so much better made than the newer flimsy stuff and the price is SO much better. I expect to get the bearings next week and have it back up by the weekend.

One thing that has drove me a little crazy... I haven't been able to determine the model number. There is absolutley no ID anywhere on this thing other than a casting number in the cast iron top that isn't a Sears/Craftsman number. I've even spent time looking on the vintage tool sites and Google images, hoping to see a familiar face.

Apparently, from looking at hundreds, almost all of them had a round crank handle in the front, as well as other differences. (Of course, as I sit here it just occured to me that possibly my crank was replaced with the current handle, but I think this handle is original.) From all my searching around, the best I can come up with is that it was probably built in the early '60s and might be a 113.299120. And getting a manual online has been a dry run. Although, I found a guy about 100 miles away today (another woodworker) that has that manual, just still not sure it's really my machine.

Good thing it is a fairly straightforward piece of equipment. I'm pretty confident (after rebuilding SS's) that I can put it together and get it all alligned and then see if I can wear it out over the next few decades.

Any outdoor power equipment dealer of any size should have woodruff keys. Take both your old key and shaft along for them to see. Also any full line farm equipment dealer (like John Deere) should have it too. About any farm store like TSC or Rural King or Farm & Fleet etc. should have it.

Yeah, found that today after I found a picture on Google that looked like the front of mine with an ident number. I think it is what I have, except mine was missing the miter gauge, safety guard and the switch, which looks like a good idea. (EDIT-add) My problem is not being able to find a free copy of the manual (PDF would be nice) and Sears doesn't offer one anymore (much less any parts).

Farmer, you're right. We do have Tractor Supplys around here and I'm usually impressed by what they have. Also, I have a great bearing supplier that probably has the keys too. I hated it when the old hardware store downtown closed (many years ago), but I managed to buy a lot of neat pegboard thingys (tech term) that held demos such as a drill, power saw, etc. Don't know what happened to them, but it was neat to own them (think they got sold with a bunch of other shop stuff about 12-15 years ago during a downsizing).

That saw looks great. I would love to hear about it once it's running again. I still have my father in laws sears hand tools, you know, the metal covered sanders, jigsaw, drills etc. Everything but the drill still works better than anything I can buy today. That saw looks of the same era. Should be a tank.

Thanks to Pennview and Culprit for the ideas. After a soak in Evaporust (for 2 days instead of 1 because I forgot it), the key came out (no heat needed).

Now to put in new bearings and put it all back together.

Tomsalwasser, I think that's the right number too. My problem is paying $20 for a manual for $30 saw! Not only am I cheap, but winter is a hard time to find work so I'm broke as well.

Pennview, I know that site, having used it many times for other tools, but no joy on a manual for the 299120, although I suspect many of the others are close enough as it does seem that Craftsman (or their manufacturer) has used the same basic assembly for many versions.

Anyway, I'll try to remember to post a pic when it's done. There are times when a tilt arbor is just handy.
