Yes, it can be done. I do not believe there is a prescribed procedure that works for every one. The only thing that might be universal is the need for "time and patience". Personally, I think it is worth the effort. You CAN come out victorious. You DO NOT want to be defeated by this machine. I mean, after all, it is just a simple spring that continuously comes unhooked just when you almost have the job done.

Well, I did it. Took out the quill feed. I followed Nick's procedure in his Sawdust Session 24. Found the spring was no longer connected to the holddown stud thingee. I cleaned it all up and after some nine or ten tries finally got the spring to stay on the stud. Works just fine now (I think and hope).
Learned several things. First, safety first. If you attempt this, wear heavy gloves. Wear safety glasses. Think before you do. That wound spring has lots of power when it decides to unwind uncontrollably and it has sharp edges. I have one cut to prove it. Also make sure that when you put the spring on the shaft that you have positioned it to wind in the proper direction and that if you test the tension after installing it that you turn the shaft in the proper direction. If you don't do this you will successsfully slide the spring right off the stud and you get to start over. Did I say nine or ten times?

Congratulations. You have done what some have given up on. You got it done much quicker than I. I consumed the better part of a Saturday morning.

The same guy has a earlier video, he was not doing so good in that one... Kept turning it backwards and the spring would do its thing and come off... it was hard to watch.

Man! you're right that was hard to watch.
Just goes to prove my point that can be so unpopular among men of all sizes and shapes....
Just cause yer a guy doesn't mean you're automatically mechanically inclined.

I will not laugh. The only difference between that guy and me is that he has a camera.
Now my next quill issue. In my original posts I talked about the quill being difficult to move and JPG offered some ideas about it being gummed up. I took the quill and feed mechanism out, cleaned them, and reinstalled them. But the quill was still a little stickly. After some fussing, I recalled the splines on the back of the quill were sticky but since no one, including the sawdust sessions, had mentioned cleaning the splines, I didn't. Well now I have cleaned the splines and the face of the nylon thingee on the drive shaft with mineral spirits. Before I reinstall, should the splines be lubed with anything? I have machine oil and LPS 1.

I would not put any thing thicker than powdered graphite.
