Square pieces of wood are a lot easier than soften edged ones to dado. My rounded logs would have been almost imposible - at least unsafe. Also shaping after dadoing removes any edge chipping. Edg3e chips is not an issue when dadoing wider boards, but is when dadoing 3/4" pieces.

I liked tdubnik's jigs! I didn't use no stinkin' jigs, just pencil marks on the miter gauge extension. It would have more accurate with a jig. Oh well! Only had a couple of rejects. Just cut shorter logs from these pieces.
