Hi,

There is a possibility that you might be one of us minority people who do not like the front shelf. I know we are a rare breed but I know I am not the only one who gave it a try then threw it out... self made from shopsmith plans for my 1976 model. It just did not fit my needs nor did I like it where it was.

Personally I'd do a simple repair and see if you like it. If you do then make your own from plans that match your flavor of shopsmith. On the odd chance you are like me the old repaired one will be easier to trash since you have less invested it it.

I am one of the mavericks. The only front shelf I got with my SS's went through the shop stove. I do want "some" on-board storage but "under" and just maybe some hanging on some odd spots but nothing hanging out in the way on the front or back. With my Push-me / Pull-me double drill press I see little reason to ever lift any of my other SS's to vertical. The one exception maybe being left tilting my old Mark VII for some odd job.
I don't want all of the giblets on it and I have no interest in having drawers or cubbies with doors.

No actual experience with one myself, but I always thought it was a shin knocker.

The shelf is not a shim knocker but the 520 fence sticking off the end does a lot worse then knock shins.

I have a self built shelf attached to the back side that I made from a 2x6 and have found it useful. Useful enough to consider giving this one a try. I thought I might put it on the planer/miter saw stand.
