I've bought 3 of them. I know of others who have bought them too. I believe the refurbisher does a great job. Many old Shopsmiths have been trashed because of this tiny knob because people didn't know not to turn the knob or neglected to do the maintenance.

A friend had this thing sitting in a storage shed for quite a long time, because he's not a woodworker and someone willed it to him.

Take your time. This is a task that usually requires nothing more than patience and good common sense. However, there are a few tricks that make even the seemingly simple jobs even simpler.
If something is not working for you - ask. Someone here will be available to help.

The only thing I can add to all of the good advice you have been given so far is to obtain a copy of a book called "Power Tool Woodworking for Everyone." Many consider it to be the "bible" for the Shopsmith. Older copies show up from time to time on Ebay and you can also purchase copies on Amazon. The cheapest way is to use the on-line version available on the Shopsmith web site:

Welcome aboard. The guys and gals on this forum have a wealth of wisdom and you can spend many, many hours reviewing the hundreds upon hundreds of posts. You can learn a great deal and get lots of hints and ideas. They can stear you in the right direction and prevent you from taking a wrong turn. Learn to post pictures here. You can find the instructions at the top of the list of threads.
In addition to the Power..... book suggested above, I strongly urge you to get a copy of the Shopsmith Instruction Manual. You can get it from Shopsmith (bookmark their site, you'll be back) for about $30 or off eBay. Make sure you get the version for the 510. Shopsmith's version will be for the 510 and 520 models. This book includes parts breakdowns, alignment instructions, and mode setup instructions.

Welcome, This forum is great and any question you ask will be answered so don't be shy about asking.
Around here it is absolutly true that there are no dumb questions. We have probably all asked what we thought at the time was a dumb question and gotten more help than we ever expected, without any ridicule.
