If you move your Shopsmith tools on Shopsmith casters eventually you will need to replace the wheels, and if you own the Mark 7 and/or the heavy PowerPro headstock, IMO, polyurethane wheels are a mandatory upgrade.

The great news is we now have a couple choices:
1.) We can replace them with the same hard-plastic OEM wheels that have served us just fine all these years, or
2.) We can upgrade them with softer, smooth-running polyurethane wheels, or
3.) We can upgrade them even further with Shopsmith's official Premium 3" polyurethane wheel upgrade. But which one is most worth it?

Good overview Scott - I need to have a closer look at my casters and the instructions that came with them

One question for you - my concrete floor is causing one end of my SS to catch when lifted into the 1st position. You mentioned washers could be used to raise the height a bit.

Is it ok to use washers just on 1 end, or if I need to add them- add them to all 4 casters ?

Is there a reason why you wouldn't want to just go to the second position?

One end only? New holes likely slightly off.

Washers are a viable 'fix'(within reason).

I expect a properly assembled caster set to provide 1/4" clearance and 1/2" clearance respectively on all 4 'feet'.

If inadequate I would add as many washers as required to achieve those clearances and to as many casters as required.

The casters may rest on the floor when fully lowered, but if no SS weight is bearing on them tis normal.

Now what on the concrete floor is it getting snagged on?

If casters are worn down, those clearances will be less.

Thanks JPG - I haven't looked closely-nor did I install the casters..but in position 1, even without SPT the left end of the unit drags on the concrete.
I dont think the casters are worn down...so i suspect the mounting holes may be slightly off. It pretty evenly drags on both sides of the base.

When it drags, I can lift up on the left end lightly and it will clear.

Normally I just use position 2 and then it rolls fine, but i would like position 1 to work also. I don't like the idea of me pushing it, it getting caught and rolling over .

JPG got to it before me. Ideally, you want the casters just above the floor when retracted so you'll get the maximum lift with each step.

JPG & Scott, that all makes sense. I guess I wasn't as particular when I installed mine. I just automatically go to the second position so that when I have the machine where I want it, it only takes one flip of the pedal on each end to set it down. I'm lazy.

Motion frugal perhaps, but 'lazy', no!
