That's what it looks like to me too, but I don't know where it would have come from. I have a shaved head and my whiskers are trimmed, so it wouldn't have come from me. And I used a foam brush to apply the first couple coats of finish and a section of t-shirt to apply the 3rd coat. So it's not a bristle from a brush.

Opposite or adjacent? If adjacent, you might be on to something...

EDIT: I just realized, you could have correctly meant "opposite" corner depending on which corner you're talking about! The opposite corner of the whole lantern assembly (which is what I was thinking) would be out of view. Only one adjacent corner is visible. But the opposite corner of that side of the lantern IS in view, as are both adjacent corners on that side. Adjacent... Opposite... it's all relative.

But to find my other mistake, look at the rails.
All I could see after doing SERIOUS digital enhancement is what looks to be an unsanded top surface of the lower front rail.

Nope. But getting warmer. In fact, the mistake is in that picture.

THAT is the thing around the opposite corner that I promised to not tell!(the second guess).

WINNER WINNER CHICKEN DINNER!!

Yep, that's it!

The joinery between the rails and stiles are half lap. So on one side of each lantern side you'd have the rail part of the joint exposed. On the other side you'd have the stile part of the joint exposed. A saw kerf is cut into those lower rails to receive the rabbeted edge of the base in the center.

I used a jig to hold each side as I ran it over the table saw blade to cut the kerf. This made sure the kerf was in the same position on each one so they would all line up when assembled. (Also kept the piece secure and my hands out of danger since there was very little to hold on to.) On that one side, somehow I put it in the jig upside down and cut the kerf on what was supposed to be the outside instead of the inside.

After "losing my religion" as Nick would say, and evaluating if I wanted to completely rebuild that side or not, I decided not and just went with it.

I noticed this earlier but thought I would let the game go awhile.
Nice work Heath. You adapted to the conditions at hand to salvage the materials. That is a talent in itself. Way to stick with it.

Lanterns are finally done!

Bad pictures, but here they are:

This was a fun project and it taught me a lot, but it took WAY too long. Hope mom likes with them.

And with that, my shop gets packed up for who knows how long while we move and then I get another shop.
