Someone mentioned using PVC pipe slightly larger than your tubes to create a bath for them. Get the right diameter pipe, glue on an end cap, slip your pipe inside, fill it with the rust remover, and let it soak. You can reuse the evapo-rust for some time.

I restored a 1962 Model 500 that had very rusty way tubes using the electrolysis method and a length of PVC gutter. The results were amazing and the process kind of fun to witness (i used rebar for electrodes), but it was probably more work than using the chemical approach. I ended up using electrolysis for all sorts of parts on that machine; I even used it on the leg panels, placing them in a big plastic garbage can with four rebars wired together around the perimeter for electrodes. The bubbling action of the electrolysis loosened up the old paint, and with just a light clean up with a scotch pad, they were ready to be primed and then coated with rustoleum hammer-finish paint. I was very pleased with the result.

Arbor Questions,

Ive cleaned up all that I found, but I'm not sure what I have, looking for some wisdom from the group. looks like 2 large bore for Shopsmith blades, one longer than the other. The rest are all 5/8 bore.

The two 'large bore' ones are SS blade arbors. SS saw blades have a 1 1/4" arbor hole. The other three are universal/molder/dado blade arbors. They are missing some of the washers. Each one should have a thick spacer and two thin washers and a locking tongue washer.

Thanks, I'll keep digging thru and look for the other parts. Couple of questions, is there a special purpose for the long vs short SS arbor? and, as those 5/8 ones appear to be dado type, I presume I'd need something else to run a 5/8 bore regular blade? found several in with the stuff.

The longer saw blade arbors are for compatibility with the 510 and on lower saw guard. The shorter ones are for 500 and prior lower saw guard. I've used those 5/8" dado/molder arbors with saw blades before, but I think the dedicated 5/8 saw arbor is a better choice. (Here again for the 5/8" saw blade arbor, there is a longer and shorter version for the different lower saw guards.)

Ok, makes sense, perhaps my dad upgraded to the 510 spec at some point.

Here is information I have put together to help identify the different Arbors made for the Shopsmith Tools over the years beginning in 1947. The first picture below is the different 5/8" Arbors made over the years and their part numbers. Note that some arbors had more than one part number and some had different versions under the same part number.
