camera iris or the flaps on the baggage carousel at the airport...
Yep, that's what I was using (out of light cardboard) before I hit upon the painter's tape fix. I bet the iris thing will be a part of any successful fixture in da future. I'm thinking aluminumum sheet, very very thin...

that blue is painter's tape. A short piece attached to the front (left) side of the lower guard, run across the gaping dust exhaust "port" and down the inside of the lower guard. Plugs the "port" hole, works at any blade height, costs nil, takes no expertise and almost no time, and can be applied at any lower guard setting.
Oh, yeah, and stops almost all dust spreading from that area.
The 'oddball' of it is the lower guard is setup here at it's closest to the blade. While this is not a detriment that I can see, it does go somewhat against SOP, at least in the theoretical SS world. I only put it here because it is easiest. But I guess I should spring for the cost of another 3/4" or so of painter's tape to see if it'll do as well when guard is fully deployed.
{however I just realized that this arrangement gives me the best lower guard dust chute performance I've ever had...}
