Nice looking pen, and good photography. The finish came out great.

Yes I did the inlay myself. One usually uses a maple for high contrast but the ash came out with a soft golden tone to it. Wish I could say I planned it that way. It's the way it came out. One can learn more by accident than by design.
Thanks for compliments.

Dwight

My first two sets of Darts
The set on the left is the first is the second
Both are hard maple the set on the right I really botched the finish and staining. I need to work on my patience.

My first Pen Mahogany I believe with a wax finish. The wood was from an umbrella that broke.

Beautiful pen! I love how distinct the grain is.
That second set of darts you say you 'botched' the stain on looks worn/antiqued. It's actually quite appealing to me!

Thanks, I'll go with intentionally distressed
As for the pen, you just never know where you're going to find usable wood. I should have salvaged more off that umbrella but SWMBO wanted it gone and I didn't want to mess with cutting it apart (Lazy). So I just grabbed 4 of the loose broken parts. I probably have enough for 10 more pens and perhaps some handles or push sticks.

This time I tried the designer series which requires a rabbet for the center band.
Blank is rock maple stained with a guardsman stain marker (the lightest color in the pack of three that comes from the big box stores). This was really handy while still on the lathe. Wax finish.

Some of you may remember when I posted the first of these back in December. I finally got the other three varnished and waxed, (things have been hectic) two for dad and two for me. The nice ones are curly maple, the other two are white pine harvested near the "Workshop in the Woods".

I did this over the weekend a chisel holder. Now that I have started I have decided to do my entire shop in this style. Shopsmith modes used:
table saw, oscilating drum sander, drill press, bandsaw, belt sander and some hand sanding. Just used a rub on poly finish for durability.
