I believe the turning capacity is a little larger at 16-1/2" to start with. Here is the info page for the Shopsmith in lathe configuration.

That is only for faceplate turning where the object to be turned can sit between the tubes. But if you need to do spindle turning the carriage gets in the way. I was measuring from the top of the carriage to the center of the quill, in any case the largest thing I have turned started about 10" in diameter.

since I just missed the sale and they will problably increase the price on it, for sure the shipping, because the damm thing weighs 35 lbs.

I guess I get it now and consider thats my sale
