Ed (reible), thank you for helping with the list of parts needed and for all the time you are spending on this. I ordered the parts on the list last night and this will save me a lot of time and the frustration of having to figure all this out on my own when the saw-train arrives. I received notification of shipment today from Jointech so it should arrive in a couple of days.
Again, thanks so much... you are a Gem.

Wecome to the Forum and thanks for posting on the subject!!! Great timing.steve40391 wrote:I have a 510 that I upgraded to the 520.
I bought an older Jointech fence from that auction site. I think it is the next size larger from the one in the 520 package.
The current one for the 520 is 32" long and the travel is I think 18". Yours looks about that same size.
I have a Bosch 1617 router, but this will apply to just about any router.
From Jointech I bought the yellow auxiliary table as shown in the picture. You have to buy the front and rear rail assemblies from SS, as well as the hardware. It is the same rails and hardware that goes on the main SS worktable. If you assembled your worktable or did the 520 upgrade you know how that goes together. I use the 5' connector tubes to support the yellow table.
Also from JT I bought the gray router plate that drops in the middle of the yellow table, and a set of three center insert openings. One of the openings will take a router guide. You have to drill the holes for the router mounting base. I used an centering "bit" in the router and put on a router guide of the same diameter in the insert to center the router. It worked out well.
The router router plate I got is Black and the inserts are yellow not sure when that change but the color match the hardware if that is a big deal to someone.
I do not have the bridge that clamps to the extension table. In the picture that is the black and green piece on the right. Instead I drilled two holes in the extension table. If you look under the table you will notice two circular patterns in the webbing that lie to the front and rear of the middle of the table. I drilled those out. I bolted the fence to a piece of oak, and drilled holes in the oak to match the holes in the table. I just bolt the oak board to the table when I want to use the fence. For alignment I clamp the JT fence to the SS 520 fence and then tighten down the bolts. They I remove the clamps and take off the SS fence. I can use the JT fence with either the router or the table saw.
If I recall the wood piece needs to be 3/4" thick... I need to make one of these if I want to use my other systems. I know for sure the Incra is 3/4" as I have made one for those system.
I think the phenolic insert is fine for this router, but I am thinking about buying a bigger router. I would like to get an aluminum insert for that router. I think the Jessem and a few others are the same size as the JT inserts.
I believe you are correct several people use this standard so you have options if you want them. I think Jointech has a blank plate for, was it $28?? I think I might order that early next year so I can make one that take the larger guide bushings I like to use.
I really like the fence. I think I have about $300 in my set-up, but like I said I bought the fence used.
Hope to hear somemore from you in the days to come.

Would there be any great advantage to ordering the front table with the magnetic strip for the scale?
Since we don't align the edge of the jointech fence I went ahead and ordered the front rail w/o the mag strip.
Then I thought, "am I messing up in this line of thought," so I have a call in to Jointech to see if there is a REAL need to have the strip.
If so, I should have time to change the order since I just put it in with SS today.
Any thoughts are appreciated.

I personally don't think you need the magnetic strip. I have one on both tables and I hardly ever use it. I don't regret that it is there but if I had a rail without it I would not add it.pinkiewerewolf wrote:Would there be any great advantage to ordering the front table with the magnetic strip for the scale?

Hi,
The front fence was redesigned for the use of the magnetic strip so if you are getting just the new fence without the magnet I see no problem with that. If you are getting the old fence part I have no idea how that might align with the rest of the system which I think you have (I think you upgraded since the swap over of the upgrade kit to have the magnetic scales). It should be clear when it arrives and if you have a problem I'm sure they can fix it for you.
As it turned out when I ordered my upgrade kit for 500 to 520 I had planned to ordered the one without the scales as it was a bit cheaper but they told me when I placed the order that they were no longer selling that kit and I would be getting the new one with scales, and they gave it to me for the price of the non-scale version. Nice enough of them!!
When I ordered the 510 to 520 conversion for my second shopsmith it came minus the magnetic strips but with the correct front rails, I called and they shipped me the missing strips. So both of my systems have the new front rails, and they both came with the same gauge blocks so I can't tell you how different the two front rails might be...

The representative from Jointech, i think his name is Earnest called me back and we had a great discussion. he wasn't aware the the 520 had the magnetic scales and I explained them to him. (My upgrade came with the magnetic scales)
His thoughts on the scales are that since we use the 520 rails instead of the Jointech rails that the scale could come in handy when routing larger pieces using the Jointech fence. The reason being, the Sawtrain for the 520 series uses the "shorter of the "screws", 18" compared to 24" or something like that.
The Jointech systems that use their rails usually "zero out" along a 48" scale and can then use the "Screw" to fine adjust from there.
My attempts at communication fall far short form some on the site but I hope this makes sense. Those who get what I'm trying to say can feel free to translate into english for everyone else.

Just happened to notice
Hi,
Several times I had looked at the Jointech site in the last year and the 500/510 Sawtrains were not active offerings (you could select the link but it would jump you directly to the 520 Sawtrain).
Today I see the 500 & 510 Sawtrains appear to be available again:

(Looking for that extra Large$ that I left somewhere)
