Teknatool called me back later on Thursday. They pulled a new G3 off the shelf. measured it on their lathe in the shop, and put it in the mail to me with a return shipping label for me to send mine back to them.

The new chuck showed up in the mail yesterday and it measures exactly what they told me it measured on the phone: less than 0.001". I measured the runout the same way I have before: on a steel rod chucked in the jaw slides. The spigot/pin jaws measure 0.0055". I haven't had a chance to actually use it yet, but I am quite satisfied.

It took three chucks and a couple extra weeks, but Temnatool made it right.

Are you able to report what part of the teknatool device caused the problem?

If I read everything correctly, you did not witness an out of tolerance condition except when the spigott was involved. Is that correct?

At any rate, this is good news.

No, that is not correct.

The spigot jaws were out of spec on the chuck package that I bought, but the G3 itself was out of spec in the replacement set that Teknatool sent me.

Teknatool told me on the phone that the spec for the G3 is 0.005". The original chuck that I received measured 0.005". Even though it was good, they asked that I send the whole set back with the bad jaws. The first replacement G3 that I received measured 0.015". The second replacement (third chuck) that I received measured less than 0.001".

Both Shopsmith quill threaded adapters that I received measured good, although the first one was too tight and would not seat onto the quill fully and bottom-out against the Aluminum ring like it's supposed two.

I visited Teknatool in Friday the Friday before last. One thing I was impressed with was their devotion to resolving issues like these as soon as they happen. just look them up on line teknatool.com and get their phone number or email address and they will expedite or overnight the part you need. Super people- just like the great people at Shopsmith! I needed an insert that uses the 5/32" setscrew in the 5/8" insert adapter. I received the incorrect one at first, but Teknatool made it right! Now my Shopsmith Allen wrench fits. Apparently some of the inserts sold by another company were not properly made for the Shopsmith. To tell if you have the wrong one, just try your 5/32 Allen wrench & see if it fits. If it's too large, you have the 5/8" adapter made for a flat shaft, not one with an angle.

This is an interesting point. ShopSmith arbors are drilled for the allen screw at an angle, matching the slant angle of the shaft 'flat', so the special allen screw (often cupped tip) sits "flat" (parallel) against the arbor for max safety and security.
If the 5/32 allen fits, I wonder if it also meets the other requirement of having the hole drilled/tapped at the correct angle.

Soon as I can dig it out I'm gonna check mine.

Are you telling me that if the adapter requires an allen wrench other than the Shopsmith 5/32" allen, then the adapter that was provided with the Nova G3, that I bought from Shopsmith, was delivered with the wrong adapter?:(

Hmmm, IF i remember correctly, my G3 was actually drop shipped from Tehnatool.

I can only speak to my G3 and adapter; I don't know if there have been different configurations sold by Teknatook and/or Shopsmith or not.

There are two setscews. The setscrew that holds the threaded adapter on the quill is a 5/32". The setscrew which holds the threaded adapter in the body of the G3 chuck is smaller than 5/32".

What are yours?

I am sharing information I received. There was a 5/8" insert that was identified for the Shopsmith. it is marked IFNS. It uses a metric screw rather than the 5/32" set screw= that's the easiest way to tell if you have the correct insert adapter. The updated insert adapter setscrew is angled to meet the flat on the Shopsmith angled arbor. I was sent the correct insert and received it on Saturday- it has no part number. I've also addressed this with Shopsmith and Teknatool as the new Teknatool catalog show the incorrect part number for the insert. Once I get a definitive answer, I'll let you all know. In the meantime, you can always contact Teknatool or Shopsmith. But it is in the process of being corrected, so might as well give them a chance.

A while back when I got my G3 I posted a quesstion about the set screw that goes from the adapter to the quill because it wasn't a standard 5/32nds. See paragraph 2 of this post http://shopsmith.net/forums/showpost.ht ... stcount=1I guess I should have called Technatool.

I saw this when you posted but since I do not claim to be a turner and have NO expertise in the adapter, I did not respond. I should have paid more attention however because I too have this same situation. Guess it is time to call Shopsmith.:(
